Food that works on a journey
Journey food has to do three things: give you enough energy, stay safe to eat for days in a backpack, and be realistic to prepare on a small stove at the end of a long day. Sort each food into one of three kinds:
- Good choice: light for the energy it gives, keeps for days without a fridge, quick to prepare. Wraps, instant oats, couscous, nut butter, trail mix, dehydrated meals.
- Possible but inefficient: safe, but heavy, bulky or slow to cook for what it gives. A can of beans, fresh bread, fresh fruit, eggs for the first morning.
- Poor choice for this journey: unsafe without a fridge, very heavy for the energy, or impractical. Fresh chicken, yoghurt, a big jar of pasta sauce, a carton of juice.
Read the journey first. In hot, humid weather, food that needs to be kept cold is never a good choice, however tasty it is. Soft and fresh foods are fine for the first day, not the last.
What to look at on the packet
Energy (kcal), weight, how it is prepared, how much water it needs, and how it is stored. The planner shows all of these on each food.
